Supporting Transparency in Extractive Industries through EITI Implementation
The World Bank is committed to advancing transparency and accountability in the extractive industries sector. In our work stream ‘Transparency in Extractive Industries’, EGPS supports the implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in a structured and coordinated way.
The World Bank has supported EITI implementation over the past 20 years through its Extractives Global Unit, lending operations, and Trust Funds (EITI MDTF and EGPS MDTF). During this period, the World Bank has allocated over US$ 82 million to EITI implementation support.
Program Design and Objectives
EITI implementation support under EGPS builds on valuable lessons learned from past engagements, aiming at efficiency and impact, driven by government ownership of transparency goals. We work directly with governments to ensure that our efforts align with their national strategies, and the broader EITI strategy and goals.
Our commitment is to deliver high-quality, timely support for the implementation of EITI in member countries. Our focus is on developing sustainable frameworks for data disclosure in line with EITI requirements.
EGPS supports the creation of knowledge products to inform public debate and policy dialogue, as well as tailored technical assistance in key areas of the extractive sector, and stakeholder engagement. We seek to embed EITI implementation support in a broader sector engagement that links transparency to policy reform, regulatory effectiveness, domestic revenue mobilization, geodata management, and the energy transition.
Through capacity-building initiatives, EGPS provides capacity development support to government agencies (including national EITI secretariats), and empowers civil society organizations to contribute to the EITI process, fostering citizen engagement and compliance with national laws and conventions.
We are committed to supporting low-income, low-capacity, fragile, and conflict-affected countries, recognizing the unique challenges they face in implementing transparency measures.
We encourage stakeholders and partners to join us in promoting transparency and accountability in the extractive industries.
