The 2023 State of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Sector focuses on the intersection of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) and Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) - Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. It applies the SDG 5 framework for the first time to systematically report on gender inequalities in ASM. The 2023 Report builds on the 2019 and 2020 reports to close the ‘global data gap’ facing the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.
This Initiative brings together governments, oil companies, and development institutions who agree to eliminate the practice by 2030.
In 2020, the World Bank projected that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic could push more than hundred million people into extreme poverty. The estimated forty-five million people around the world working in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) were particularly vulnerable because of the informal, often precarious nature of their working conditions and lack of access to social safety nets.
The 2020 State of the Sector Report builds on the analyses from the 2019 report to close further data gaps. It focuses on how ASM’s contribution to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG8) Decent Work and Economic Growth could be maximized.
